Maersk is running out of space in Rotterdam

In four years’ time, Maersk Line will have to look for extra terminal capacity in or outside Rotterdam. In 2010, the existing terminal of affiliated company APM on the (first) Maasvlakte will be full while the new terminal on the Second Maasvlakte will not be ready yet then.  With APM Terminals, the Port of Rotterdam Authority won its first customer for Maasvlakte 2 last week. The agreement was the result of a months-long tug of war over the Euromax terminal.

The Danish Firm AP Moller Terminals management that on March 20, 2006 fully took over the operation at Container Terminals in Apapa Port has increased Cargo handling tariff charges by over one thousand per cent, thereby breaching the concessioning agreement they signed with the Nigerian Ports Authority.

Port Board says “yes” to a solar supply and license agreement with SunEdison
The Oakland Board of Port Commissioners (Port Board) authorized the Port’s executive director to enter into the Port’s first solar energy purchase agreement Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at the Port board meeting. Port Board President Kenneth S. Katzoff said, “This public/private partnership is an innovative approach to providing some of the Port’s energy needs and demonstrates our continuing commitment to environmentally responsible decisions.” In July 2004, the Port Board established a Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS). The RPS requires that by 2017, 20 percent of the electricity purchased for resale by the Port comes from renewable energy sources.

Ships prefer to bunker in Rotterdam, the “cut price” oil pump of the world. Verenigde Tankrederijen, market leaders when it comes to carrying bunker oil on inland waterways, supply fuel oil to large container ships, using very large inland tankers.  With a length of 135 metres and a carrying capacity of nearly 10,000 tonnes, the Vlissingen, flagship of Verenigde Tankrederijen, or VT, is bigger than many ocean-going ships.
