5. Russian Railways: Round table discusses freight transport.

A round table took place yesterday at Russian Railways’ subsidiary TransKontainer to discuss issues on freight transport with representatives from independent container operators. The focus of the meeting was forms of cooperation between TransKontainer and the independent operators and the results of freight transport in IH2006. It was the second round table since TransKontainer began operating on market principles as an independent subsidiary of Russian Railways on 1 July 2006.

“Russian Railways has spent over 20 billion roubles on safety in last three years,” said Pyotr Shanaitsa, head of the Traffic Safety and Environment Department during a two-day safety conference which began today.

Summarising the results of 1H2006, Shanaitsa noted that the measures implemented by the Company have improved the quality of the transport process and ensured the stability of rail traffic at a time when the volume of freight and passenger traffic is increasing. Crashes and derailments of passenger trains have been avoided, he said, while defects have been reduced by 7.9% since 2005.


7. Russian Railways wants state support to build freight branch lines between St. Petersburg and Helsin

Russian Railways expects state support from Russia’s Investment Fund to build freight branch lines as part of the high-speed passenger train project between St. Petersburg and Helsinki, according to Oleg Morozov, Vice-President of Russian Railways. Morozov rejected press reports that Russian Railways and Lukoil would build and finance the branch lines jointly, emphasising that the cooperation between the two companies in Russia’s North-Western region was on a completely different project, namely developing railway access lines to the distribution and shipping terminal Lukoil 2 on the island of Vysotsky in Leningrad oblast.

10. Russian Railways and Lukoil sign agreement to develop rail access to Lukoil 2.

In 2004-5, Russian Railways invested 203 million roubles in the port infrastructure of the distribution and re-shipment complex Lukoil 2 on the island of Vysotsky in Leningrad oblast, building 41 km of connecting routes and Pikhtovaya station and also electrifying parts of the lines.


11. Russia rejoins International Union of Railways after 58 year gap.

The President of Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin took part in 68th Session of the General Assembly of the International Union of Railways held in Montreal from 6-9 June 2006.
Yakunin noted that “this session of the General Assembly has become a major event since it took the decision to accept Russian Railways as a fully-fledged member of the International Union of Railways. So 58 years after Russia was involved at the foundation of the IUR and then withdrew, it has once again become a member of this authoritative and professional transportation organisation.


12. Rolls-Royce breaks ground for new jet engine testing facility in US

Rolls-Royce broke ground today for its new outdoor jet engine testing facility at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s John C. Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. This new facility will be used to test development and prototype jet engines for performance, noise, validation of safety systems and other factors. Initially, it will test the company’s latest, high-thrust Trent engines, the Trent 1000 and Trent 900, being developed for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A380 respectively. Work is expected to begin at the site in the second half of 2007.

13. Rolls-Royce signs new deal for Monarch engine overhaul

Rolls-Royce Aero Repair and Overhaul (AR&O) has signed a new agreement for complete engine overhaul with Monarch Aircraft Engineering Ltd. This new contract covers Monarch Airlines’ fleet of Rolls-Royce RB211-535s for the Boeing 757, and International Aero Engines (IAE) V2500 engines for Airbus A320 family aircraft.


14. Russia - Finland Transport Cooperation

"Pendolino" high-speed train, which will link Saint Petersburg and Helsinki, appears in RF for service-test by the end of 2006, V. Yakunin, OAO RZD President, said.
OAO RZD is carrying out a complex of measures for high-speed passenger transportation on Saint-Petersburg - Helsinki line. Existing infrastructure will be used for transportation; at the same time cargo routes will be removed and 42 kilometer of railroad will be built at the Priozersk and Leningrad region.

15. RZD and Siemens Plan To Sign 576-Mln Euro Contract RZD

Russian Railways (RZD) and Germany's Siemens signed a contract on Thursday evening for the purchase of eight high-speed trains for a total of 576 million euros.The trains will be produced in Germany and cost 276 million euros, he said. RZD and Siemens discussed raising funding for the project with help from Siemens, Vladimir Yakunin said.
