Zeeland: plan for container terminal Print

Vlissingen - the province of Zeeland plans to relaunch a procedure that it hopes will result in the construction of the Westerschelde Container Terminal (WCT). The terminal is an initiative of the Exploitatiemaatschappij Schelde-Maas (ESM), the partnership between Zeeland Seaports and the Port of Rotterdam Authority. An earlier plan for the container terminal was rejected by the Council of State in 2004.

The Provincial Executive of Zeeland has now submitted a new plan for a smaller terminal. During the past two years, extra studies have been conducted in this connection and the design modified. All being well, a decision will be made this autumn. The terminal will be able to handle two million containers and will initially generate over eight hundred jobs. According to expectations, the terminal could be up and running in 2011.
