Van Oord to dredge in Oman Print

Gorinchem - The 'Rotterdam' port in Oman has awarded the contract for the construction of a quay wall with a length of over two kilometres, together with the associated dredging works to a consortium under the leadership of the Gorinchem dredging company Van Oord. Also working on this project are BAM subsidiary Interbeton and the Belgian Six Construct.

Van Oord is responsible for almost half the job. The other half will be equally split between the other two partners.

The works form a part of the construction of the third phase of the port of Sohar.
The existing quay wall is to be extended by 1.9 kilometres in order to offer space to various industrial activities.

There will also be a five hundred metre loading service quay. The work also includes the dredging of 21 million cubic metres of sand, modifications in the fishing harbour, the relocation of the breakwater and the construction of a platform for the handling of heavy cargo.

The total order has a contract value of almost two hundred million euros.
The port of Sohar, under Rotterdam management, will be dredged out to a depth of eighteen metres, so that in the future the largest container ships, as well as supertankers can be accommodated. The sand to be dredged away will be used for land reclamation for the future container terminal. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2008.
