ROSPA award for ABP Print

Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s largest and leading ports group, has won a prestigious RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Occupational Health & Safety Award. At an official ceremony on 11 May, ABP was presented with a Silver Award. The RoSPA awards are given to companies that successfully reduce the number of accidents in their workplace, and which exhibit a strong health and safety management structure.

In the past, ABP’s operations have received RoSPA awards for strong local performances, although this is the first time that ABP has received an award for consistent improvement as a company overall.

As a large-scale industrial company that owns and operates 21 ports around the UK, a significant number of ABP’s employees work in potentially hazardous environments. As a consequence, the Company relies on a robust safety apparatus to minimise the risk of accidents, basing its approach on the belief that accidents and injuries suffered at work are preventable. The Company has invested a great deal of time and effort in hard-hitting awareness campaigns that educate its staff on the importance of working safely and, in 2005, was delighted to see its reportable injury rate fall to 9.3 injuries per thousand employees (down from 14.0 the year before).

Bo Lerenius, CBE, Group Chief Executive, ABP, said: “We are very pleased to win this award because it recognises that, through dedication and hard work, we can beat our reportable injury targets and make our ports safer places to work in. It recognises the effort that has been made, not only by ABP’s safety management, but also by all our employees who believe injuries at work can be prevented.”
