Thamesport (London) Limited has taken delivery of a further 13 new terminal tractors, supplied by MOL Group of Belgium. The new tractors will be used to haul containers between the quayside gantry cranes and the only automated container-stacking yard in the UK. This latest injection of new equipment will increase the current number of tractors operating at the Medway port to 40.
Chris Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, which owns Thamesport, said: "It is important that we continue to maintain our leading position in the UK port industry. This latest investment in new, state-of-the-art equipment will help to secure Thamesport’s future competitiveness by improving turnaround times to and from the yard, and will lead to significant gains in productivity.”
The terminal tractors feature powerful 4x2 drivelines, capable of handling loads of up to 80 tonnes in weight. All tractors are built to a modern design, with ergonomic safety cabs, fulfilling ROPS (Roll-Over Protection Systems) and FOPS (Falling Object Protection Systems) safety tests. They feature the latest in chassis construction methods and low emission engine technologies.
The spacious air-suspended cab features additional noise insulation, giving the driver maximum comfort with a lower noise level. The longer wheelbase of 3300mm makes it possible to couple all types of trailers, and provides the option of installing a bigger (300 litre) fuel tank.
