Doug J. Marchand, Executive Director of the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), and the CKYH Alliance (Cosco, “K” Line, Yang Ming and Hanjin Shipping) announced the addition of the “Shanghai/Savannah Express,” a new service between Asia and Savannah.
“‘The Shanghai/Savannah Express’ will provide our customers and beneficial cargo owners throughout the nation additional opportunities to ensure reduced transit times to and from Asia,” said Marchand. “Savannah’s ability to increase capacity on the terminal and at nearby distribution center complexes will allow our customers to grow their business in Georgia.” The recent opening of Phase One of Savannah’s newest container berth, CB8, the ongoing increases to container storage areas and other equipment additions are part of the Port of Savannah’s 10 year, $750 million improvement plan to boost container capacity, Marchand explained. “Port of Savannah has always been a perfect fit for the CKYH alliance,” said Ray McDermott, “K” Line’s Vice President of Atlantic and Gulf Services. “We are pleased to have announced our fourth direct call to Savannah and the third express call giving the large customer base in Georgia the best transit times in the market… A true Savannah express!” The first call for the “Shanghai/Savannah Express,” also known as CKYH’s AWE-5 service, is scheduled for August 2 at GPA’s Garden City Terminal and will offer 21 day service between Shanghai and Savannah. Georgia’s deepwater ports and inland barge terminals support more than 275,968 jobs throughout the state annually and contribute $10.8 billion in income, $35.4 billion in revenue and some $1.4 billion in state and local taxes to Georgia’s bustling economy.
