“Russian Railways has spent over 20 billion roubles on safety in last three years,” said Pyotr Shanaitsa, head of the Traffic Safety and Environment Department during a two-day safety conference which began today. Summarising the results of 1H2006, Shanaitsa noted that the measures implemented by the Company have improved the quality of the transport process and ensured the stability of rail traffic at a time when the volume of freight and passenger traffic is increasing. Crashes and derailments of passenger trains have been avoided, he said, while defects have been reduced by 7.9% since 2005.
In addition to capital investment in safety, Russian Railways is also devoting much money and effort to motivating staff directly involved in safety. In the last three years, over 375,000 railway workers have received bonuses totalling 3.37 billion roubles for ensuring accident-free traffic. Over 975,000 workers, in other words, the absolute majority of railway workers, underwent retraining at railway training centres. Russian Railways has spent of 8 billion roubles on this training during the last three years. Nevertheless, Shanaitsa emphasised that guaranteeing safe and accident-free rail transport would remain one of the Company management’s top priorities over the next few years. The Programme to Increase Traffic Safety 2006-2008 was drawn up by the railway divisions, management and departments of Russian Railways and will help achieve the Company’s safety goals. Russian Railways intends to spend over 17 billion roubles on implementing the Programme and its technical and operation solutions to improve safety. Source: Press Release
