Russia and Finland discuss... Print
Russia and Finland discuss further possibilities for stimulating East-West rail cargo routes.
On 28 June in Moscow, Vladimir Yakunin, CEO of RZD Russian Railways and Henri Kuitunen, CEO of VR Finnish Railways signed an agreement on organizing freight traffic on Finland-Moscow-Finland route with use of the 'Northern Lights' container train. The Agreement assumes organizing the Northern Lights container train on Finland-Moscow-Finland route with provision of a complete package of logistic services for freight transport with the container train. The Agreement contains safety and punctuality regulations and depicts responsible parties, provides free route for the train following the approved train diagram, sketches mechanisms for data exchange on the train travel, etc.

In January-May 2005, 66.200 TEU of cargo were transported between Russia and Finland, that is 5.800 TEU more than during the same period last year.
There are now three container trains operated between Russia and Finland: Nakhodka-East-Buslovskaya (from East to West 121.000 TEU in 2004, 48.200 TEU between January and may 2005,2,8% more than during the same period last year.); Finland-Moscow (In 2004, 2.151 TEU); Zabaikalsk-Buslovskaya (two testing trains ran in 2004 carrying 172 TEU, in 2005 9 trains carried 830 TEU).
