October Railways successfully tests rail infrastructure at Ust-Luga. |

October Railways has successfully tested the rail infrastructure for the ferry at the port of Ust-Luga. During the trials, the mechanisms for loading and unloading wagons by rail onto and from the middle deck of the ferry were tested at Ust-Luga. All the tests went off without a hitch.
From 2007, Russian Railways plans to transport 800,000 tons of freight and in 2009 up to 1.9 million tons by the rail ferry from Ust-Luga to Baltiisk in Kalinigrad oblast and then on to the port of Sassnitz in Germany. The construction of the road-rail-ferry hub to serve the Ust-Luga - Baltiisk - Sassnitz is nearing completion. Russian Railways is continuing work on its project to develop the feeder lines to Ust-Luga and as part of this is constructing the Yuzhny park at the Luzhskaya station near Ust-Luga. Viktor Stepov, head of October Railways, said that the ferry connection with Kaliningrad was Russian Railways’ contribution to the economic independence of Russia. Source: Press Release
