China's Olympic Organizing Committee to Lease More Than 1 Million Square Feet From ProLogis at Beijing Capital International Airport ProLogis announced that an industrial park it is developing in China will be used as the primary logistics and distribution center for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
ProLogis Park Beijing Airport has been designated as the official distribution site for Olympics-related equipment and material by the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, or BOCOG. In addition to distribution, BOCOG will use the entire, 1.08-million-square-foot (100,000-square-meter) park for warehousing, light assembly and administration of logistics operations. "The Beijing Olympics are of enormous importance to China, given the huge scale of the event and the prestige that will be conferred on China as host country," said Ming Mei, ProLogis managing director and head of the company's China operations. "From a logistics standpoint, they will also be extremely complex, requiring world-class supply chain operations and a state-of-the-art distribution infrastructure. We're delighted that BOCOG has selected ProLogis as its distribution facilities provider and look forward to working with them closely as they implement their Olympics planning program." The park is located 3 kilometers from the Beijing Capital International Airport cargo terminal and 15 kilometers from Beijing's central business district. BOCOG has leased the park's existing 283,000-square-foot (26,300-square-meter) distribution facility and reserved all remaining land at the site, which will be developed into three additional buildings totaling approximately 793,000 square feet (73,700 square meters). ProLogis will develop the remaining facilities over the next 12 to 18 months as the Olympics opening date approaches. Total investment at the site is expected to exceed US$43million. UPS, the world's largest package delivery company and a leading provider of supply chain services, is providing logistics planning and management services to BOCOG under a previously announced agreement and will be working with ProLogis at the park. Established in 2001, BOCOG is the agency charged with managing the massive preparations for the 2008 summer games in Beijing. BOCOG's responsibilities cover every facet of Olympics planning, including infrastructure improvements, construction of stadiums and other venues, staffing, logistics and marketing. By the year 2008, BOCOG is expected to include more than 30 separate departments and close to 4,000 employees. Beijing Capital International Airport is one of the world's top 30 cargo airports, with a cargo volume expected to reach 2 million tons by 2008. The airport is undergoing a significant expansion in order to accommodate increasing passenger and cargo traffic expected as a result of the Olympics. ProLogis Park Beijing Airport is located adjacent to the airport inside Beijing Airport Logistics Park, one of three government-designated logistics hubs in the Beijing area. Source: Press Release
