NYK Logistics has been awarded a further contract with Land Rover to manage the supply of components to point of fit on the Defender and Range Rover production lines at Solihull.
Having successfully implemented an inbound supply chain operation for all Land Rover models and an internal logistics operation to feed the Range Rover Sport and Land Rover Discovery production lines, the new contract represents a significant extension to the scope of NYK’s activities within the plant and the next phase in the development of PAG and NYK’s strategic partnership.
First manufactured in 1948, the Land Rover Defender remains the world’s most versatile off-road vehicle. Available in nine body styles and three wheel bases, few Defenders are the same, presenting some specific logistical challenges. The Defender line feed operation started in early June. With the Range Rover operation scheduled to go live later in the year, NYK will ultimately employ almost 200 people across the two new operations. Initially appointed by Ford’s Premier Automotive Group in 2000 to provide inbound and internal logistics services to support the launch and ongoing production of the Jaguar X-Type at Halewood, NYK Logistics’ relationship with PAG has subsequently developed to include the collection of components from PAG’s pan-European supplier base and the JIT delivery of parts to the Jaguar plant at Castle Bromwich, the Aston Martin plant at Gaydon and the Land Rover plant at Solihull.
