Providing world class services for the Group At the start of the year 2006, Deutsche Post World Net has established SERVICES as a new segment within the Group. It operates on the same level as the four market-oriented segments MAIL, EXPRESS, LOGISTICS and FINANCE, and it will be accounted for separately under IFRS.
The new corporate structure. The operations combined in the new segment have two clearly defined tasks: First, they offer world class services on a global level to all business units of Deutsche Post World Net. Accordingly, SERVICES does not only include the corporate center at Deutsche Post World Net's headquarters, but also the key elements of the shared global infrastructure of the Group: retail outlets (except the Postbank retail outlets), hubs and gateways, and aviation services. Second, the SERVICES segment is providing a full range of cross-functional services to the operating business units, integrating the company's Global Business Services with functions such as finance operations, legal, procurement, insurance, fleet management, global customer solutions, business consulting and IT services, among others. Creating the new SERVICES segment follows a clear rationale: Deutsche Post World Net intends to improve the efficiency, performance and transparency of the global services and infrastructure functions. Following the Group's strong expansion over the past years, the operating business units have been placing increasingly challenging demands on the internal services. Combining all service functions in a separate segment with independent reporting lines is a consequent step which is supposed to consistently enforce world-class standards and quality throughout the global service organization. The operating businesses will clearly benefit from this development: Relieved from the necessity to also take care for parts of the global logistics infrastructure and purely internal service functions, they will be able to fully concentrate on their customer-related key competences. At the same time, the business units will be able to use a service organization and infrastructure providing them with high-quality services at a competitive price. Deutsche Post World Net has reported separate figures for the new SERVICES segment initially in the first quarter report for 2006. By doing so, the Group once more improves transparency for its shareholders. Source: Press Release
