Deutsche Bahn to cough up for BAX Global? |
Reports that Deutsche Bahn plans to buy BAX Global for between 800 mn euros and 1 bn euros have yet to be officially confirmed by either company, although Reuters reports a DB source as saying that the purchase is to be concluded at a special meeting of the German rail operator's supervisory board on Saturday.
Such a purchase would undoubtedly boost Deutsche Bahn's air and sea freight activities, particularly in the US-Europe and US-Asia trade lanes. For DB's subsidiary, Schenker, the acquisition of BAX Global would strengthen its airfreight activities, giving competitors like Deutsche Post and Kuehne & Nagel a run for their money. BAX Global posted an operating of $22.2 mn in the third quarter of 2005 on revenues of $738 mn. According to Reuters, Brink's share price has risen since the suggestion in April that offloading BAX Global would improve Brink's share price and help pay off its legacy costs. Brink's shares jumped nearly 10% on Monday to close at $46.71 on the NYSE, having risen from a year low of $29.73 in May.
