Lufthansa Cargo is now routing its freighter flights to and from Asia via Kazakhstan. Stopover in Astana will shorten flight times and simplify operations. In the future, all the carrier's MD-11 aircraft on routes to and from Japan and China will stop over in the Kazakh capital Astana. Crews will change there and freighters will be refuelled before continuing their flight to Asia.
Now that Lufthansa Cargo has abandoned its former stopover points, Astana -with more than 40 take-offs and landings per week - will become Lufthansa Cargo's second-largest cargo airport after Frankfurt. Lufthansa Cargo Chairman Stefan Lauer: "By flying to Astana, Lufthansa Cargo will be able to significantly reduce its flight times to Asia from now on. That will mean shorter transport times for our customers, particularly to Japan. At the same time, focusing on just one stopover point will simplify operations and improve the stability of our services to Asia." Lufthansa Cargo's fleet encompasses 19 MF-11 freighters. Asia is the world’s fastest-growing market worldwide for the cargo carrier. About 40 per cent of Lufthansa Cargo's traffic revenue is generated in the Asia/Pacific region.
