Heathrow-Jeddah service launched Print

Three-times weekly service sees expansion of business class product to meet demand
bmi, Heathrow’s second largest airline, today (Thursday 18 May) further expanded its long haul network with the launch of a three-times a week service from London Heathrow to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The launch of the service builds on the extremely successful first eight months on bmi’s first Saudi route – London Heathrow to Riyadh.  The airline has seen very positive load factors since its launch in September 2005 with extremely strong demand for the business class product. As a result the decision was taken in April to successfully increase the number of business class seats available from 24 to 42 on the Riyadh, and now the Jeddah routes.

Business class customers on both the Jeddah and Riyadh routes are able to experience top quality food prepared by bmi’s unique in-flight chef, whilst passengers in all classes share in the highest quality of food and beverage service.

Flights from to Jeddah will operate from London on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday with flights returning to the UK on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Nigel Turner, chief executive of bmi, said: “I am delighted that we are building on our successful London-Riyadh service with the launch of the London-Jeddah route. Today marks a further expansion of our long-haul network from Heathrow and demonstrates our commitment to providing services between the UK and Saudi Arabia.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Britain have close trading relationships, and we are delighted to be able to serve the travelling needs of Britons and Saudis. Our service to Jeddah will provide an important link for the development of trade and commerce between our two countries as well as creating an important gateway to the cultural and religious centres of Mecca and Medina.

“We were particularly encouraged by the demand for our business class product on our flights to Riyadh. This is why we took the step in April to increase the number of business class seats on services to Saudi Arabia to cater for demand.

“I would like to thank the Saudi authorities for the whole-hearted support and welcome they have given us in re-establishing direct links by a British carrier after a 14 month absence. I would also like to thank the British Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles as well as Carma Elliott, British Consul-General, for their valuable help and assistance in the launch of this new bmi service. With their continued support and help, we are confident of continuing to develop strong and successful routes into Saudi Arabia.”
